Featured Book: Elementary Mathematics for Teachers |
|
A Note From the Authors: Liping Ma's influential book "Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics" showed
that math
educators and mathematicians agree on many specifics about what
mathematics elementary school teachers should know to teach effectively. Her
book points towards a real solution to the problem of educating
prospective elementary teachers. Unfortunately, Ma's book is not suitable as
a mathematics textbook, and none of the current textbooks on the market (which we know of) follow
her path. ``Elementary Mathematics for Teachers'' is our effort to construct a mathematics course for elementary teachers that incorporates Liping Ma's insights about effective teacher knowledge. It is a mathematics book designed to set prospective teachers on the road to developing what Ma termed a ``Profound Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics.'' We hope that it will appeal to mathematicians and educators. In fact, mathematicians and math educators are currently working together on successful courses which use our textbook.
